I created this series of Cluster Constructions over an interval of twenty years. The earliest of these is an assemblage of overlapping and interlocking images derived from newspapers and magazines, followed by a diminutive community in a cigar box. You will then see the first one I made in a box using my own photographs. An old wine box features Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, while three plaques focus on Montgomery County, Maryland, Harvard Square and Kona, Hawaii.
The first Cluster Construction, circa 1979. No photos of mine among these interlocking images; they are from magazines.
This tiny community in an old cigar box was one of the first in a twenty-year series of Cluster Constructions. I hadn't yet begun using my own photos.
Two years later I was using my own photos in each piece.
Fifteen years after I began this project, I finished my last one in a box, featuring the storefronts and signs of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware..
Here's that box, wide open!
Overlapping and interlocking images on this one of Montgomery County, Maryland. First place winner in state competition.
